The construction company tasked with building a new city hall and community center for a north St. Louis County city is suing the city for nearly $2 million.

A judge found that the City of Jennings cant sue its own city council for open meeting violations.

The council majority said they wanted to avoid a potential lawsuit from the contractor hired last November to build the city center, who threatened to sue for breach of contract.

JENNINGS — The Jennings City Council on Thursday voted to reinstate a contract for a long-awaited $11 million city hall and community center cancelled in recent weeks by Mayor Gary

Those same council members signed a statement confirming a vote of no confidence against the mayor last week.

Jennings Mayor Gary Johnson has faced controversy over personnel matters, having vehicle towed and stopping the construction of a new community center.

During the meeting, council members argued amongst themselves and with residents in the crowd. St. Louis County police intervened several times.
