Dunno about that, but it is true that travel was predominantly by boat during my grandparents' time in Alappuzha (Alleppey that time). My mom always said she learned to swim like how we learned to cross main roads in Bangalore as kids. A couple of years ago, when we took a local boat ride along the waterways while on holiday there and called up to tell her about it, she started laughing because that was her local commute to school for years! (Imagine if one of our children came to us in 40 years and said tourists were paying to be driven on Outer Ring Road as a holiday experience!
