The winner s worthiness is usually a divisive subject, mostly on the aptly named social media platform, Twitter.

The fresh, new attractions making Kaikōura an even more enticing destination

Lee Slater The full 48km loop of the Kaikōura Trail is graded easy to intermediate and takes 3–4 hours at a leisurely pace. The Kaikōura Trail Kaikōura has got on the biking bandwagon big time with this brilliant new day ride, suitable for averagely fit riders or e-bikers. A 48km loop, it loosely follows the perimeter of the plains, taking in coast, countryside and the banks of two rivers, the Hāpuku and Kowhai. On local advice, we rode it anti-clockwise, heading north from town along the Pacific coast. The trail then turns inland, following the Hāpuku River via a lumpy, fun track through rare remnant coastal forest. We even managed a cooling dip, egged on by a rope swing.
