Gee & Ursula: Why did it take a murder before city took action on homeless camp?

Crews cleared out a homeless camp in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood over the weekend and posted signs that Olga Park would be temporarily closed.
This came after a 31-year-old man was shot several times in the chest in the early hours of Memorial Day while exiting his tent. Ursula Reutin’s mother lives in a condo across from the park.
People who live and work in that area, including my mom, feel much safer now that the camp is gone. Hopefully the several dozen people who set up tents there now have a safer place to live, too.
A new contract with the city of Seattle has some homeless outreach groups frustrated and upset. They say they won’t work with the city anymore unless there are changes.

SEATTLE - The city of Seattle is clearing out a homeless camp on Seattle s Capitol Hill after a series of fires broke out there.
Campers at Broadway Hill Park were ordered to move out by Wednesday. The city s Parks and Recreation Department posted notices at the park on Monday, then moved in Wednesday to clear the camp.
City officials say they had to take action after 10 fires broke out at the encampment over the past six months.
The city s Hope Team is offering the people living in the park shelter and services.
