Not-for-profit organizations can now apply for a one-time emergency grant of up to $12,000, rather than waiting for the Alberta Security Infrastructure Program to officially launch in the fall, the province announced Tuesday. Funds are being made available now after “recent multiple acts of vandalism at places of worship and the suspected arson that burned a church to the ground,” said a news release.

Justice Minister Kaycee Madu said Albertans from all backgrounds should feel free to worship free of violence, and the grant will protect those most at risk. Premier Jason Kenney said being able to exercise freedom of religion in peace and security is essential.
