He became chaplain to Cosmo Lang, the archbishop of Canterbury, in 1931, and soon collected chaplaincies to the king and the Speaker of the House of Commons, too. During the war he became Rector of St Margaret’s, Westminster (Parliament’s church) and in 1946 became Dean of Westminster.
