The Michigan State Police post has had an extensive history in the Upper Peninsula since its establishment in 1917. The Michigan State Police has earned an enviable reputation after more than a century of service to the people of Michigan,” Phillip Schertzing, assistant professor emeritus of the school of criminal justice at Michigan State University and retired employee from the Michigan State Police, said. “It built that legacy by making its Value Statement a reality: ‘A proud tradition of service through excellence, integrity and courtesy.’
The Michigan State Police will soon observe its 104th anniversary on April 19. According to Schertzing, political, economic and social circumstances and events in the Upper Peninsula were influential in the origins and early development of the Michigan State Police.
