a century, a woman will be the face of our paper currency. and who will win the duel and will alexander hamilton be the face of our new $10 bill? that's all "happening now". we begin on this friday with heart ache in charleston south carolina, a city in mourning as a gunman accused of gunning down nine people in church is about to appear in court. i am jon scott. >> and i am jenna lee. he is charged with nine counts of murder and reportedly already confessed to the killings. and the governor said the deaths warrant the death penalty. mike? >> reporter: jenna, sadly you can see piling behind me flowers a memorial to minute people gunned down helplessly in cold blood. the flowers and indication of the town coming together. the mayor said that is exactly what is happening. >> the hateful person came to this community with some crazy idea he would be able to divide and all he did was make us more united and love each other even more. >> reporter: there were indications that dylann roof was troubled and hateful. a few friends said the angry racist language was increasing with intensity and frequency. and one friend took away and hid the 45 caliber handgun and gave it back after roof sobered up. nine people are dead. roof is charged with nine counts of murder and one count of using a fire arm and his bond hearing is one hour away. >> joining us on the phone is a reporter with the courier joined us and gave us great context. robert, what remains the biggest outstanding question in your mind? >> in my mind how he got the gun. there is not an official word but conflicting reports that it was given to him or he purchased it in charleston. if he purchased it i am not sure if all of the legal protocols were followed. >> intshgs how he got the gun and gun rights in general is coming up with the story. and the president talked about this yesterday. is that also the talk in the city of charleston and what is the question in the community? >> i think there is a number of questions but the gun question is certainly one we will follow-up as the story goes on and the other question is how will the community come together and how will we help each other heal from the shock and sadness this created. >> we had a former detective that charleston is a model for the country on how to handle such a devastating event. i want to ask you about a story you wrote. we spent so much time and showing video of the shooter, dylann roof. and we'll spend time on the victims as well. you profiled one of them. it is just one story and can you tell me about the one woman? >> i have great feedback of cynthia hur d. and a librarian and worked in the charleston county libraries and most everybody had respect for her and she was a serious and smart woman and a fun- loving and a good heart and loved to laugh. she was nearing retirement. and i talked to another person. she was not just a li brarian that helped them check out books but helped them write resumes and improve computer skills and employ their employability. >> it seems that she's one example of what was an extraordinary group of people? >> yes, they were all really special. and that's what compounding the ey were in church. they were doing bible study. that tends to attract faithful and giving and caring people and losing a group like that makes it more poignant. >> we are seeing the church filled and people joining together in prayer and what is the feeling, robert about the death penalty? we heard comments from the governor saying this is what the goal is going to be. >> the governor will not be the one to decide. but in this case it is a no brainer. why not have the death penalty if you don't apply it to a case like this. i will be interested approximate to see who represents dylann roof and what defense or make a plea arrangements and there are reports that he confessed. >> and interesting things about confederate flag can you tell us about that? >> south carolina was in the spot light 15 years or so ago because the confederate flag was on the top of the state house dome. there was a compromise enacted and it took the flag off of the dome but in the state house grounds and some people felt like that was enough we had the state acknowledged the african-americans stories about it. but the controversy didn't go away. to this day i think the naacp has controversy. it is out there and even though around the same time there was a brand new african-american monument put on the state house grounds and kind of tells the story of that part of the state's history, which the monument is well done. >> interesting, one of several story lines emerging from the state of south carolina and we'll watch the story, robert i appreciate your great reporting and taking time to join us today. >> thank you for having me. >> a massive manhunt in its third week. officers covering 600 square miles in the search for the prisoners david sweat and matt. and they are add to the list of 15- most wanted fugitives. >> authorities shared some new information and tell us there is a lot they can't tell us about because of the investigation in the clinton correctional facility. the main focus for two escaped killers, richard hunt and david sweat. it is the most wanted. they are involved in the manhunt along with canine and aviation units. it is not just a grid search. troopers are patrolling streets and responding to it 1500 tips so far. and they say morale is not an issue. they are motivated and eager to catch the escaped cons. >> we'll not go anywhere and we'll pursue them. we'll not stop chasing leads until we put richard matt and david sweat back in prison. >> they have cleared 200 empty structures and searched hundreds of occupied homes and combed 600 miles of trails and railroad beds. if they found something significant, they are not telling us about it. and the department of corrections is doing a thorough review of procedures and policies. and they tell us they are in place to protect the community and it is unlikely there will be another escape from behind these walls john. >> rick thank you. those two men are not the only fugitives that have evaded capture. there are more than 220 escaped u.s. prisoners still at large. a convicted killer who escaped from indiana prison by hiding in a garbage truck. and another prisoner who squeezed through the ventilation system. he was serving 35 years and think he is now in mexico. >> new jersey governor chris christie taking the stage. and we'll talk about if he dropped hints and if he would announce his plans. and would you vote for chris christie if he joins the run for president? you know the importance of heart health. you watch your diet, exercise... and may take an omega 3 supplement but it's the ingredients inside that really matter for heart health. not all omega-3 supplements are the same. introducing bayer pro ultra omega-3 from the heart health experts at bayer. with two times the concentration of epa and dha as the leading omega-3 supplement. plus it's the only brand with progel technology proven to reduce fish burps. new bayer pro ultra omega-3. look for savings in this sunday's newspaper. vo: today's the day. more and more people with type 2 diabetes are learning about long-acting levemir®. as my diabetes changed it got harder to control my blood sugar. today, i'm asking about levemir®. vo: levemir® is an injectable insulin that can give you blood sugar control for up to 24 hours. and levemir® helps lower your a1c. levemir® lasts 42 days without refrigeration. that's 50% longer than lantus® which lasts 28 days. levemir® comes in flextouch® the latest in insulin pen technology from novo nordisk. levemir® is a long-acting insulin used to control high blood sugar in adults and children with diabetes and is not recommended to treat diabetic ketoacidosis. do not use levemir® if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. the most common side effect is low blood sugar which may cause symptoms such as sweating, shakiness, confusion, and headache. severe low blood sugar can be serious and life-threatening. ask your doctor about alcohol use, operating machinery, or driving. other possible side effects include injection site reactions. tell your doctor about all medicines you take and all of your medical conditions. check your blood sugar. your insulin dose should not be changed without asking your doctor. get medical help right away if you have trouble breathing, sweating, extreme drowsiness swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, dizziness, or confusion. today's the day to ask about levemir® flextouch®. covered by most health insurance and medicare plans. >> in washington today, presidential hopefuls are takeneding the annual faith and freedom conference. you can see rick sanatorium who is running on the republican side. and earlier new jersey governor chris christy took the stage and slammed rand paul to his opposition to renewing the patriot act. >> this is not politic accident but life-and-death for our country and keeping america safe and strong and not giving political speeches on the senate floor and not raise money for a presidential campaign. that's where i stand. >> senator rand paul said his speech is sincere. and we'll talk about what is going on with jackie. and senator politics editor of the daily beast. welcome to both of you. >> thank you. jackie who seems to be winning the loudest applause in this particular convention. >> yesterday ted cruz gave a rousing speech and talked about religious liberty and played well there. and these are are the people he's courted the evangeliical base. ben carson got a big reaction from the crowd after his speech. those two so far are the leaders but you know it can change. ted cruz in particular really seems to have their loyalty at this point. >> vince, it is tough to say since rick sanatorium is on the stage right now, but this was his bread and butter organization the last time he ran? >> right. it is an important stop for a republican candidate and most all of them are attending this. they need to get in time with social conservatives. and look the country is so socially liberal in the obama era, and many people are socially liberal as socially conservative. the people who go to this and feel marginalized and this is a good idea to get in front of the conservatives and reference god, faith and religion and how they form their leadership. it will play in front of the voters. >> here come the governors, the sitting governors that appear to be ready to jump in the race. chris christie and ka cusack of ohio and probably bobby jiowa -- jindal. and how do they impact in this late of the game. >> they are going to be kiting for a similar spot. particularly cusack and chris christie and scott walker. they are looking at the same voters and cusack has been focusing on the fact he balanced the budget. in ohio the state constitution said you have to. and that is fiscal responsibility and what he's emphasizing to contrast him with the other candidates. it will be interesting to see if he can get an edge. chris christie and walker they are raising money for a potential presidential campaign. but you will see it play out in july and going to get super interesting for sure. >> all of these guys vince, say they have executive experience and putting it to work right now and not pointing fingers at jeb bush. they are not touting their credentials of a decade ago? >> right. jeb bush is the front runner according to the national polling with mark row rubio and scott walker who is the national average poll front runner. but you get chris christie and in the last 48 hours, over and over he emphasized that being an governor is an asset and getting out there in hurricane sandy and being able to stand in front of the microphones, and saying this is how we have a plan. christie is the most gifted political communicator of the field and polling and coming in with a tremendous amount of baggage he didn't have the last time the republicans begged him to get in the race against obama. the governors are trying to make their records as executives stand out. >> and some say i have to wait until my state budget gets done before i run for president. people respect that and they want you to do the job you are paid to do before you run for a job you might not get, but at the same time it hurts them with name identification and campaigning? >> i agree with you like cusack. but walker's his budget is due and set to pass in the end of june and they are waiting for that and so they can't be hit on saying they are not doing their job. cusack is making the rounds and make sure he will have the money to do this and with money comes name identification and sometimes in the early states where they blanket the areas, and so we'll see. it is a good point, you would think they would be out sooner. >> vince, will some of this large republican field shake out immediately after iowa with do you think? >> that is a good chance of happening. the field is unwieldly and as you see when you go in to iowa and you cross the thresholds. early states tis it a we anning process. all of the oxygen and mountainy goes to the candidates that produce. and this is why the early states are important and all of the focus and money and attention is focused there. they know once they cross the threshold their campaigns are over. >> and some of them haven't even started yet. some of the people have not announced yet. >> since, and jackie thank you. >> thank you. >> scary moments for passengers on board of a cruise ship after it slammed in a concrete wall. where it happen and what went wrong there. and european leaders trying to chart a new way forward as greece inches closer to a default. what it means for us at home. listen up team i brought in some protein to help rearrange the fridge and get us energized! i'm new ensure active high protein. i help you recharge with nutritious energy and strength to keep you active. come on pear it's only a half gallon. i'll take that. yeeeeeah! new ensure active high protein. 16 grams of protein and 23 vitamins and minerals. all in 160 calories. ensure. take life in. >> an officer shot in a man hot in milwaukee. we have a little bit. some detectives confronted a suspect in wisconsin in milwaukee. that suspect opened fire on the detectives and one was shot. the one shot is a 52-year-old man with 25 years of service and the wounds are described not life threatening though the family is with the officer in the hospital at this time. it is a developing story because the suspect is on the loose. the police described this man armed and extremely dangerous. a black male mid- 20s 5- 9 thin build and black pants and dark shirt. apparently a lot of folks looking for this one individual. an officer shot in milwaukee and a man on the loose, we'll keep you posted as we get more. >> right now an investigation underway in a cruise ship accident in up state new york last night. the ship slammed in the concrete wall and left 17 people with minor injuries. it was en route from montreal to toronto at the time. >> european leaders scrambling to pick up the pieces after a failed meeting over greece's bail out. it is all leading up to a summit to determine greece's fut nurt euro zone. amy kellogg as the details. >> reporter: a lot of jitters over here. greece has to come up with the repayment to the international monetary fund. and the ins president said there will be no grace period for greece. she let rip with pointed comments about it time to restore dialogue between the adults in the room. and the greek leader he's lashed@the ins as criminally responsible for greece's desperate situation and he's in russia attending the st. petersburg and signing a gas pipeline deal with russia and in which greece will be paid transit rights. if greece asks for a bail out russia would consider stepping in. and much was made where he visited a stat u. most greeks want to stay in the euro and took to the streets yesterday to make that point. but they have cut to the bone and have nothing more to give european creditors who want them to raise more taxes and cut pensions. that is a redline for the greeks who claim that pensioners help to keep food on the table for family members. unemployment rate is 25 percent. and 50 percent on young people. there is a run on cash. more than 2 billion in cash has been withdrawn on monday. that is in anticipation of the curiency control. we don't know the ramifications if greece defaults before the end of the month. some say it could be worse than a lehman brother's situation and others say it would be contained and there would not be conitagent to other markets. there is another big meeting on monday. >> thank you. >> cia drone strike killed a al-qaeda leader. but the bomb maker is still alive. why the cia sees him as an imminent threat and what they are doing to take him out. >> north korea kim kim jong-un said the scientist there have created a wonder drug capable of curing deadly illnesses. put your hand over your heart. is it beating? >> this is interesting. we talk about the islamic state and al-qaeda and associate with with osama bin laden. al-qaeda has franchises all over the world. the one in yemen in the araban peninsula is seen and has been seen for a long time as most dangerous by far primarily because of the master bomb maker. but yemen is engulfed in a civil war and a saudi arabia war against a militia backed by iran and a closest thing to a war from saudi arabia and iran in the middle east. they have chaos all around them. and afghanistan to pakistan. it is it like water for a plant and they grow and spread and that's what you see with the al-qaeda affiliate in yemen. >> how can you say they are stronger than ever. and there is chaos and water and food and medical supplies are tough to get? >> in yemen two things make it better there are them. the capitol of yemen fell to the iranian- backed militia. the u.s. pulled out cian and special operation's personnel and that means people who run the campaign of drone strikes were no longer physically in yemen. they were all pulled away and the other is the yemeni government basically collapsed. if you are al-qaeda in yemen and pressured by the u.s. and by the yemeni government and suddenly the government collapses and the u.s. pulls out intelligence and satellite forces you are suddenly free and clear. two major threats is gone. >> your title is the most dangerous man alive. why is he so difficult to find and pinpoint and take out? >> he is hiding in the yemen. and viewers can imagine finding a person in a region of millions and full of mountains and valleys is hard. he's an expert in building nonmetallic explosives. bombs of liquid and powders and they are not things that metal detectors pick up or bomb sniffing dogs. and we talk to people in the government and that's the biggest concern that a bomb made of liquid or powder like the underwear bomb makes it on the plane like that bomb did and it is not caught in advance. that kind of bomb though it seems small, it was an envelope of powder in the underwear and syrifrj of acid it would takedown a plane. >> and how transferable are his skills?
