p bristol. that s what these heroes did last night. alexandria fields joins me now. what are you learning? reporter: it appears the officers were led directly into an ambush starting with a 911 called reporting a domestic incident between siblings. it appears when they arrived they were confronted outside by a suspect. a neighbor describes hearing a hail of bullets that followed. it was like a burst of ten or so gun shots and then there was another burst. and my husband ran downstairs and looked out the window and went off again. the sirens were crazy. it was just like a war zone. reporter: sergeant dust tin demonty, officer alec hemzi both killed. a third officer was shot and injured. the suspect shot and killed, his
murder of his former girlfriend hae min lee citing the information was not turned over to defense attorneys and the existence of two other suspects who may have been improperly cleared. our correspondent alexandria fields has been following this. and you have what happens now. it is vacated. but the question is will prosecutors try to bring this to trial again, they re looking at new dna evidence. prosecutors are making it very clear that the fact that they pushed to have his sentence vacated was not a statement of their belief in his innocence. it was more to question the integrity of the conviction which they come to severely doubt after this year long investigation into the case. now they have 30 days to decide whether or not to bring adnan syed to a new trial and that will hinge largely on dna results they re trying to expedite. dna has always played a key role in this case but the technology has developed over time. they re applying the new technology to some of the old
