The dance contest
For those that closely follow the world of chess on Twitter, MrDodgy surely is a well-known name. Constantly sharing jokes related to the world of over-the-board and online chess in a creative and incredibly consistent way has allowed the “man on a horse” to become an active member of the ‘real’ chess world, as a number of elite players not only interact with him online but have also accepted to participate in the “Prestigious MrDodgy Invitational”, whose second edition came to an end on Sunday.
These DVDs are about Understanding Middlegame Strategies. In the first DVD dynamic decisions involving pawns are discussed. The second DVD deals with decision making process concerning practical play.
The Mr Dodgy Invitational is back!
Anish Giri returns to defend his title and fight for the same photo of a man on a horse as the 16-player Mr Dodgy Invitational 2.0 starts Wednesday May 12th. The blitz knockout tournament on chess24 has the kind of line-up chess fans would choose, with the likes of Baadur Jobava, Adhiban, Alexei Shirov and Daniil Dubov ensuring we can expect explosive action. Jan Gustafsson will commentate and there are trailers… lots of trailers!
Everyone loves a sequel.
It’s almost a year since Anish Giri flagged David Navara in a dead drawn position in the 1st game of the Mr Dodgy Invitational final before going on to win 7:2. The Dutch destroyer went on to become an online beast and carried that form into the second half of the Candidates Tournament, where he was the player who pushed Ian Nepomniachtchi hardest.

Study of the Month: April 2021
What is an ‘endgame study’? By definition, it is (unless an author specifies otherwise) a position in which White wins or draws
in exactly one way.
How do you know that there is exactly one way? Endgame tablebases (EGTB) are a proof, but unlike many other genres, there is no way to use brute force or heuristically solve an endgame study to find a complete proof of it being correct. That is where cook hunters come in. A cook is an incorrectness in an endgame study, either a refutation or a dual. A dual first and refutation later might lead to a unique solution, but not to a correct study usually, as the author’s intention is lost. Let’s explore cooks!

A large chasing group
After 5 rounds, Karen Movsziszian was leading the standings table as the only player with a perfect 5/5 score. The Armenian veteran suffered his first loss in round 6, when Marc Narciso defeated him with the white pieces. José Cuenca also won in round 6, and went on to face Narciso that same day (two rounds were played daily from Thursday to Sunday) the eventual winner of the event scored a second consecutive victory to take the sole lead.
Going into the penultimate round, there was a 3-player chasing pack a half point behind the leader, with Cuenca facing Bernat Serarols on board 1 and Movsziszian playing top seed Miguel Santos on board 2. Both games finished drawn, which allowed three more players to join the chasing pack going into Sunday afternoon’s final round.
