Lapeer community mourns death of longtime educator who was ‘more than just a teacher’

Shannon Leigh Nichols died on Monday, Feb. 15, after battling melanoma. She was 46.
“A great mom, great wife, great employee,” Lapeer Community Schools Superintendent Matt Wandrie told MLive/The Flint Journal Thursday, Feb. 18. “This is a tough, tough time for our district.”
Jen Rondy, a teacher at Lapeer Community Schools and close friend, said Nichols “was there for everyone and anyone.”
“She was just so loving, so kind to anybody that she would ever meet,” Rondy said.
Nichols was born on July 3, 1974, in Lapeer to parents, Georgia Gibbons and Ed Gray, according to her obituary. She is survived by her husband of 25 years, Ray Nichols, and daughters, Alexis Hanton and Hannah Nichols.
