Jan. 28 SPRINGFIELD One of the state’s top public defenders is faulting Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and Police Commissioner Cheryl C. Clapprood for using the “bully pulpit to stoke fear.”
Randy Gioia, deputy chief counsel for the Committee for Public Counsel Services, reacted to comments made Wednesday by Sarno and Clapprood criticizing a Springfield District Court judge’s decision to release a firearms suspect from custody on the condition that he wear a GPS monitoring device.

SPRINGFIELD – Mayor Domenic Sarno and Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood on Wednesday reacted with disdain after a firearms suspect who was arrested for cutting off his GPS tracking device was released from custody on the condition that he wear a GPS tracking device.
“This makes no sense,” said Clapprood.
“You got to be kidding me,” said Sarno. “What the hell does it take to hold a repeat violent offender?”
Sarno and Clapprood have for the past year have repeatedly criticized judges for setting low bails and even allowing the release of people charged with firearms or violent crimes.
