The two major strategic focuses of the Hangzhou-based tech giant will be “user first” and “AI-driven”, new CEO Eddie Wu writes in a letter to staff.

The Hangzhou-based ecommerce leader will reinforce strategic investments in the areas of AI-driven tech businesses, internet platforms and its global commerce network, Wu said.

Alibaba claims Zhang would channel expertise differently to continue supporting the company

The Hong Kong-listed shares of China's Alibaba Group fell more than 4% on Monday after the surprise departure of former CEO Daniel Zhang from the technology giant's cloud computing business. Alibaba announced Zhang's decision to depart the unit in an internal letter to staff seen by Reuters, with co-founder Eddie Wu becoming the unit's acting CEO and chairman. Zhang also handed over the role of group CEO to Wu on Sunday as scheduled.

Studies find that A.I. improves the performance of less experienced workers, potentially making it the rare digital technology that reduces inequality.

"The board of our company expresses its deepest appreciation to Mr Zhang for his contributions to Alibaba Group over the past 16 years," Alibaba said in a statement that simply announced that Wu would succeed Zhang in his roles at the cloud unit.
