Chips. Hinojosa so a lot of people, when they think of the south bronx, 1960s, 70s, when you were growing up. Right, right, right. Hinojosa . Their image is of a place that was entirely desolate, that was, you know, in destruction. Right, right. Hinojosa but for you, it was a totally different reality. Well, there was that element to it. But i always say that i was very fortunate to have grown up in that time period, because the culture, as far as latino and African American culture, particularly afro puerto rican, afro cuban culture, and obviously African American culture, were in full force in the streets, particularly in the summertime, because we had rumbas in the park all the time. Thats when youd hear people playing drums, conga drums, and playing this beautiful rhythm. Hinojosa now, im going to stop you right there, because i bet some people are saying, they had what in the park . Rumbas. Right, rumbas. Hinojosa okay, so were going to assume that theres a lot of people who are w
Lets start with the sizzle before we get to the steak. Are you gonna run for president . I think i just got an f. applauding t. C. Boyle, welcome. My pleasure. Congratulations on the book. Thank you so much. I publish books all the time, every year, and i go out on the road and every once in a while somebody says, congratulations, and im wondering, for what . Its like going to war when you publish a book. No, its like giving birth, here it is. It was long awaited. No, no, the thing about this book that i thought was especially great was it took me back, truly took me back to the mid and early 90s, you know. This is a novel based on real events. Its based on the experience of biosphere, biosphere 2 in arizona in the early 90s. You have really drawn a picture that is similar to, but, in so many ways, different from the real thing. Well, thank you. When the biosphere 2 experiment first happened in 91 through 93 northeast of tucson, i was fascinated by this. Like most of the public, i clip
Theres diabetes; i know somebody who has diabetes; i know that in some people it can be really dangerous, in other people, they can manage it. So im a little confused. So what is the headline . What do we need to know about diabetes that is central to the issue . Well, the first thing, maria, is that diabetes is a Major Health Care problem around the world. This is not just in this country, it is everywhere. Hinojosa but its not something that you see, right . Isnt that one of the problems . I mean, you can be living with diabetes and be fine. Mmhmm. Actually, it is estimated that perhaps, for type 2 diabetes, which is the most common type of the disease ten times more frequent than type 1 diabetes, for instance people only have the disease for ten or 15 years without knowing that they have the condition until they manifest the first symptoms, which would be perhaps, like, frequent urination, increased thirst, fatigue, tiredness, infections that dont heal or dont get better very quickl
You saw a problem and over time took it on and lets start with the sizzle before we get to the steak. Are you gonna run for president . Think i just got an f from you. applause Marcus Samuelsson, welcome. Thank you so much for having me. Im super excited to be in this iconic location. Great to be here with you, and im so excited about your cookbook. Thank you. So wonderful. I wonder why a cookbook from this restaurant. You have 11 restaurants all over the country, all over the world. When is it time for a restaurant to have its own cookbook . Well first of all, i mean my wife, my family, we live in harlem. I walk to work to the red rooster and its really, the community that has embraced us so much. So i felt like opening red rooster was really an opportunity to start a new conversation. Right. About as much about harlem as it is about food right . About the place, but also the mis, i think the miseducation about African Americans contribute about culture of this country. So harlem real
Hinojosa and i told you that i was going to do this, because as one journalist to another journalist, its hard to kind of sum up, because you have interviewed every major rock and roll and pop musician and country musician that exists, i would day. Okay. Well, youre overstating it, but ill take it. Hinojosa overstating a little bit. If you had to choose your like, top mostmemorable interviews from this huge history, what would it be . What would it be . You know, maria, i have forgotten them all, actually. Hinojosa laughing every, single one even elton john. Mick . Mick who . Hinojosa laughing well, you know; sum it up. Yeah, its a tough choice, but i would say that quite often, it was the behindthescenes stuff that goes on that builds to a story that makes it memorable for me. For example, one of my favorites is ray charles, because at the time that i suggested the story, he was not really on the charts and getting the kind of acclaim he shouldve been. Hinojosa what year was this, ben
