The woman's body was recovered and the alligator involved was captured by a contracted nuisance alligator trapper.

The pensioner had been walking her dog by the pond at the Spanish Lakes Fairways community in Fort Pierce on Monday when the alligator launched itself from the water.

An approximately 10-foot-long alligator pulled Gloria Serge into the water after attempting to take her dog, FWC said.

"We ... recovered her body, kept surveillance on the alligator with our helicopter & personnel around the lake, and assisted the FWC (gator) trapper."
