Brighton Walk to End Alzheimer s co-chairs share stories of mom

Barb Binkley and Don Cortez have a lot in common. Both are business owners, both live in Livingston County. Both lost their mothers to Alzheimer s.  This year Binkley and Cortez are co-chairing the Brighton Walk to End Alzheimer s for the Alzheimer s Association.  Binkley s mother, Elizabeth Laughery, died in 2013 after a four-year battle with Alzheimer s at the age of 84. Binkley said her father, Robert, soon started showing signs of memory loss following his wife s death. He died in 2018 at the age of 88 from dementia.  It’s not the way you want to leave this world. I feel like in other situations, where you receive a diagnosis and you are told you only have a limited time left, you have time to get your stuff together and say what you want to say to people, she said. With this, it just takes you. The mental capacity is just gone.

May 6, 2021 The Alzheimer’s Association Michigan Chapter will partner with the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Center at the University of Michigan (MADC) to offer two research programs focused on the latest in Alzheimer’s research in May. The Michigan Chapter also will offer a variety of virtual education programs, social engagement programs and more than 100 support groups to Michigan residents in the coming months. “We’re thrilled to partner with Dr. Roberts and the MADC on our upcoming research events and offer much-needed programs and support to Michigan residents,” said Jean Barnas, Alzheimer’s Association program services director. “Unfortunately, Alzheimer’s is a growing burden here in Michigan and across the nation. It’s so important that Michiganders know we’re here for them.”

Alzheimer s Association raises funds, awareness of disease Ionia Sentinel-Standard MONTCALM COUNTY  An organization dedicated to helping those affected by Alzheimer’s disease is calling on the community to raise funds and awareness.  The Alzheimer’s Association announced the date and location for this year’s Montcalm and Ionia Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This year’s event takes place later this year, Sept. 18, at Frugthaven Farm, 11466 W. Carson City Road, in Greenville.   Teams and individuals can register for the event and start raising funds at: act.alz.org/mci.  The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event dedicated to Alzheimer’s care, support and research, according to a press release.
