It was a busy weekend for criminals and crimefighters in East London, with break-ins at businesses, homes and armed robberies taking place in numbers. Local security company Red Alert alone responded to 15 business break-ins, five house robberies and four armed robberies around the city at the weekend.

The search for an enduro rider who went missing after the Lilyfontein Funduro event on Saturday is continuing. SAPS Search and Rescue, Gonubie police station, the Green Scorpions, Metro EMS and the riding and farming communities have banded together to carry out extensive searches in the area from the air and on the ground.

A tragic attack on Gonubie Main Road on Saturday morning has left the driver of a white Avanza dead after an alleged attempted robbery. Community activist Amanda Timms said she heard about the attack from a reliable source on her community WhatsApp group. “It was a white Avanza, it looked like a taxi,” Timms said.

Yet another assassination-style shooting rocked Buffalo City Metro, a third such incident in less than a week, with the latest shooting on Monday claiming the life of a 34-year old KwaBhaca-born, but East London-based businessman. Residents in East London’s Vincent suburb were shocked when businessman, Odwa Mazele, in his black Mercedes-Benz SUV, was apparently ambushed and shot dead in Frere Road in the early hours of Monday morning.

Residents of Beacon Bay have raised the alarm about a 13-year-old boy who, for the past few months, has risked his life sitting or lying in the road in busy traffic from early morning until late evening most days of the week. Gonubie activist Amanda Timms said she was touched when she saw the boy, who appeared homeless, carelessly lying on the road at the Retail Park intersection two months ago, and had tried to help him.
