Nations from Brazil to Indonesia met Wednesday to seek a plan to save the worlds tropical rainforests, a day after South American leaders drew criticism for failing to adopt a pledge to protect the Amazon.

The Amazon climate summit is over and a final joint declaration, called the Belem Declaration, has created an alliance for combatting forest destruction without any overall conclusion or guiding principle,  with countries left to pursue their individual goals to restrict further deforestation.

Eight South American countries signed a declaration Tuesday to end deforestation along the Amazon River but rejected collaboration in favor of a deal to allow each nation to pursue its own conservation goals.
