Human faces sculpted into stone up to 2,000 years ago have appeared on a rocky outcropping along the Amazon River since water levels dropped to record lows in the region’s worst drought in more than a century.

As the Amazon Rivers water levels hit record lows, an array of 2,000-year-old human faces and intricate carvings emerge from the rocky shores -shedding light on ancient indigenous cultures and their practices in the region.

The carvings of human faces on the shore of the Amazon are thought to be at least 1,000 years old.

A drought in Brazil has lowered the water levels of the Amazon River enough to expose ancient stone carvings depicting human faces.

The state of Amazonas, the largest in Brazil, recorded 3,181 fires from Oct. 1-23, an all-time record for this month, according to monitoring by Brazil’s space agency, INPE.
