Amazon is cutting 18,000 roles at the company, extending a previously-announced round of layoffs that originally impacted 10,000 workers.

In his announcement, Mr. Jassy explained that the company is not in "heavy people expansion mode" this year, in reference to the current economic situation.

Mass layoffs are rare at Amazon, but the company has had rounds of job cuts in 2018 and in 2001. Amazon has reported two consecutive losses in 2022.

Amazon layoff plans have grown to nearly twice their original scope, with the company now planning on laying off 18,000 workers.
