The City of Ypsilanti has elected a black woman Mayor for the first time in city history. Nicole Brown received 76% of the vote in defeating nonpartisan challenger Amber Fellows and Libertarian Mark Alan King. WEMU’s Josh Hakala has more.
Michigan voters re-elected all three state leaders Tuesday, who made history four years ago as an all-women elected leadership team. Voters also approved all three statewide proposals on the ballot.
When Ypsilanti mayoral candidate Nicole Brown was declared the winner of the Democratic primary in August, many thought that was the end of the race. With Ypsilanti being a heavily Democratic area, the primary winner often runs unopposed in the November general election. That is not the case this year. Community organizer Amber Fellows is running as a non-partisan candidate, and Mark Allen King is seeking the office on the Libertarian ticket. WEMU’s Josh Hakala looks at the race in this extended report.
