This week sage advice and not from the government either. The suggestion is to plant salvia, a member of the sage family, one of those plants especially welcome because they light up these dark, dour, days. Salvia in its many, many guises will provide splashes of garden colour when most is lost and down here, in our mild climes, it does so well into winter. Pat McCree, from Newnham Road in Binstead, sent me a photograph of her salvia elegans, aka pineapple-scented sage (pictured above). It’s also known as Pineapple Sage or Tangerine Sage. Pat says: “It is lighting up my garden at the moment. It will not survive the frost but I am enjoying it while it lasts and I always take a few cuttings for next year.”
