The happy task of introducing your president and my friend marnie sandweiss. I want to give you a version of what ive been describing as an intellectual wedding toast. Will present this room as a las vegas wedding chapel and tell the story of marnie and me and her work, which got us all here. Let me start with the magical alchemy of graduate school. All of us led headed thinkers turned into gold tone scholars and teachers picture a process of something that works Something Like this. Imagine a group of students as a cohort. The cohort becomes class mates once in a while they become lifelong friends. So, colleagues, cohort, classmate, colleagues, and that golden thing, a friend. The coronavirus pandemic. Chair neal thank you for joining me. I have the greatest personal and professional regard for the United States conference of mayors. A lot has to do with the fact that we had to make immediate decisions along the way that did not always receive a chorus of support from the citizenry. Days of being the mayor of springfield, at the time, the hundred largest city in the country. And i feel a great sense of personal and professional satisfaction from what we were able to do and the immediacy of it. I think with he will anor, i would like to understand why she was unable at a certain moment in the middle of the war wh he asked her to be his wife again and stop traveling and stay home and take care of him to say yes to him. He loved her and she still loved him. Why didnt you do it . Hes going to die soon. For him, id want to understand why he couldnt share himself more fully with anyone. He was the most charming, most sparkling personality on the surface. Everybody thought how warm he was. But underneath, there was such reserve in him. I would want to try to understand why that was so and why he couldnt give himself more to the people who loved him. What makes this book different than all the rest . Well, i think what i want to do in this book is understand not only franklin and eleanors relationship which is looked at in many, many cases about ut to un
