House Republicans in North Carolina are pitching an overhaul of public education laws in the final days of the session that would take power away from superintendents and the State

The House might or might vote on Wednesday but the Senate isn't scheduled to vote when it reconvenes on Thursday. There are numerous vetoes, bills and concurrences to be addressed, including the seat on the Guilford County Board of Education.

State Rep. Jon Hardister (R-Guilford) added language about Guilford County's debated school board seat to Senate Bill 9, which was about Apex. It passed the House, and if the Senate concurs, controversial former teacher Michael Logan almost immediately could replace William J. Goebel in District 3.

A House bill requiring North Carolina public schools to teach students a unit on the Civil Rights Movement has found widespread bipartisan support among state legislators.

After no movement for more than four months, a newly adjusted substitute of what some call the state's "don't-say-gay bill" advances in the House K-12 Education Committee and may be headed for a floor vote.

The bill would establish Civil Review Boards that could be arbiters for decisions involving police and first responders, including the potential to overturn decisions.

Speaker Tim Moore said House members would debate and vote on the budget this week. Cooper doesn't like as much about it as Republicans liked about his plan.
