A rare solar eclipse is expected on June 10. The sun will rise over the region looking like a crescent moon, long-time Hudson Valley Meteroglist Joe Rao reports. 73 percent of the sun's disk will be obscured by the passing new moon. “People usually have to travel to see a solar eclipse,” SUNY New Paltz Physics and Astronomy professor Dr. Amy Bartholomew told the Times Union, “Many people never have the opportunity to see one in their lifetime."

A partially eclipsed “crescent sun,” a rare celestial event, will be on view for Hudson Valley residents who get up in time to see the sunrise at around 5:24 a.m. The early wake up is worth it – especially considering this kind of eclipse has only happened in our area twice in the past 150 years: in 1959 and 1875.

'Let the laying begin'

‘Let the laying begin’ Backyard chicken ordinance adopted by Board of Commissioners Backyard chickens made another and final reappearance before commissioners on Thursday, April 15 at the Board of Commissioners regular meeting. Previously, this issue has seen attention from multiple county boards and concerned and supportive residents. One such resident, Dr. Amy Bartholomew, who has over 20 years of veterinary medicine experience, has been helping county staff amend and perfect the rules and regulations for owning backyard chickens in Forsyth County. “[Chickens] really do make great pets,” Bartholomew said at a regular meeting held on Dec. 3, 2020. “And they’re a great learning tool … to stay connected to where our food comes from and agricultural production.”

Forsyth County commissioners approve ordinance allowing backyard chickens

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Residents in certain areas of the county will now be permitted to house chickens their backyard. The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance April 15 that permits residents to keep chickens provided they meet certain requirements and it is permissible under their HOA covenant, if applicable. The ordinance has been under the county’s microscope since late last year, with commissioners, county staff and other interested parties finalizing the regulation last week. Some of the delay in approving the ordinance was to ensure it did not inadvertently conflict with ordinances related to housing chickens on agricultural properties.
