Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs releases statement of resignation of former Terrace Councilor

CFNR Network Mar 5, 2021 11:34 AM The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs has released a statement regarding the resignation of former Terrace councilor Jessica McCallum-Miller. In a statement the Union says,” Jessica should not have to fight to be heard and respected at the table. She should not have to fight to assert and protect her cultural identity, practices, and traditions. Consequently, UBCIC is disappointed.” The union is urging the Mayor and Council to examine their processes and practices. McCallum-Miller resigned from the position on February 22. In a committee of the whole meeting council unanimously agreed to direct staff to reach out to the office of the Ombudsperson to conduct a review of the situation. However, the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs is calling on council to support a thorough investigation by an Indigenous person who is well informed on Indigenous Title and Rights.
