Suspect in decades-old California murder captured in Alamogordo

ALAMOGORDO, New Mexico Police have arrested a 64-year-old man in Alamogordo in connection with a 1980 cold case where a woman was found dead in her Southern California apartment.
Andre William Lepere was arrested last week on suspicion of the murder of 79-year-old Viola Hagenkord in Anaheim, California, New Mexico State Police said in a statement on Monday.
A neighbor discovered Hagenkord s body on Feb. 18, 1980, after entering the elderly woman s apartment because she hadn t been seen for two days, police said, “which was unusual because she was well known throughout her apartment complex community.”

Judge: New Mexico Must Give At-Home Students Fast Internet -

A New Mexico judge has ordered education officials to provide computers and high-speed internet to students who still don t have them in a landmark ruling that for the first time in the state has set a standard for internet speeds for public school children.
The ruling requires state officials to immediately determine which students covered by the sweeping lawsuit are still lacking quality internet, or devices, and to provide them with what they need, including transportation if they can t get fast internet from home.

An Alamogordo man was arrested for an alleged murder in California more than 40 years ago.
Andre William Lepere, 64 of Alamogordo, was arrested April 28 on charges stemming from the investigation of a 1980 murder in Anaheim, California.
Lepere was arrested by Anaheim Police detectives out of Anaheim, California and the New Mexico State Police Investigation Bureau.
He was arrested for first degree murder for the death of Viola Hagenkord with a special circumstance allegation of rape by the Orange County, California District Attorney s Office, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Lepere allegedly murdered 79-year-old Hagenkord in her home on February 18, 1980 where officials at the time determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation and was arrested as a result of DNA evidence identifying him as the murderer, according to the Los Angeles Times.
