Add a sense of adventure to lockdown exercise with a microchallenge

Add a sense of adventure to lockdown exercise with a microchallenge Peter Watson © Provided by The Independent It’s midwinter, bitingly cold and I’m out for my regular lockdown run. But I’m not where I’m supposed to be. Having deviated dramatically from my usual route, I’ve hauled my way up a punishingly steep hill to the edge of town. Why? It’s all in the name of adventure. My typical route follows a mostly flat and agreeable trail that avoids the torturous ascents and knee-pounding descents that define the rural town where I live. Located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, the market town of Richmond, with its Norman castle, Georgian architecture and cobbled market place, is utterly charming. But it is an exhausting place to exercise. As such, and rather counter-intuitively, I’ve honed my running route to avoid the worst of the town’s contours.

The night-riding mum who cycles 10 hours a day By Angie Brown image captionLeonne Hutchinson covered 1,400 miles (2,200km) on her bike in November When most people are asleep, mother-of-four Leonne Hutchinson has been cycling around the streets of Edinburgh in the dead of night. She has clocked up more than 10 hours every day on her bike as she pits herself against the other 297,000 players across the world who compete in a virtual game called Turf. They win points by cycling, running or walking to as many zones as they can. It often takes the 51-year-old piano teacher deep into historic graveyards and down dark alleyways in the early hours of the morning.
