The Ukrainian Army is encountering an array of challenges that has complicated the early stages of its counteroffensive, especially the large swaths of minefields. But its leaders are urging patience, insisting the main push is yet to come.

KYIV, Ukraine -- Ukraines military on Sunday reported recapturing a southeastern village as Russian forces claimed to repel multiple attacks in the area, while a regional official said three people were killed when Moscows troops opened fire on a boat evacuating people from Russian-occupied areas to Ukrainian-held territory along a flooded front line far to the south.

As waters from the flooding of a burst dam began to recede, Ukrainian forces were trying to break through stout Russian defenses in the south and east.

Russian attacks are complicating evacuation and aid efforts in areas devastated by the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

New York Times: Ukrainians have become used to shelling, but this is something else.

With Russia and Ukraine blaming each other for the collapse of the Kakhovka dam, experts say that an external attack or even structural failure might explain the disaster, but that it is not likely.

As rescue efforts plucked people from rooftops, and offered fresh water and shelter, Turkey’s president called for an international investigation into what caused a dam to fail.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said a major Ukrainian operation had begun in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment.

They were among three people killed in a Russian missile attack, officials said. Ukraine opened an investigation, as Russians described shelling and evacuations in border regions.
