As the US military faces a shortage of recruits, high school students were reportedly auto-enrolled in military classes implied to be mandatory without their knowledge.

Young people are being slotted into military training by their high schools without their consent and against their will. The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps enrolls about a half million students and has annual funding of over $400 million.

An investigation found that thousands of public school students were being funneled into JROTC classes without ever having chosen them, either as an explicit requirement or by being automatically enrolled.

In high schools across the country, students are being placed in military classes without electing them on their own. “The only word I can think of is ‘indoctrination,’” one parent said.

Pershing High School is one of the schools receiving a complete makeover. The school will be torn down and rebuilt from scratch.
