The Tenancy Tribunal decision has allowed two tenants to continue renting a South Canterbury property under a fixed-term tenancy agreement signed as part of the sale of the property.
A landlord has failed at the Tenancy Tribunal to reduce a fixed-term rental agreement with tenants so she can live in her property near Geraldine. Angela Haynes had bought the Pleasant Valley property for $850,000 from Kaye and Nicholas Highton in October 2020 with the sale and purchase agreement including a two-year deal for the Hightons to rent the property back for $250 a week. Haynes went to the Tenancy Tribunal to have the fixed-term tenancy reduced because of “an unforeseen change” in her circumstances, saying she had been made redundant from her job in the North Island and had relocated back to the South Island where she had been unable to secure permanent full-time employment had was working casual positions.
