One night in Auckland in 1984, six women abducted a University of Auckland lecturer named Mervyn Thompson and beat him, tied him to a tree, and accused him of being a rapist. Though he was never convicted, Thompson had a reputation for harassing, abusing and exploiting women through his position of power, and these women, tired of men getting away with abusive behaviour, took matters into their own hands.
