ALAPPUZHA: The central team tasked to study the avian influenza outbreak and the impact of Covid-19 spread began its investigations in the district on Thursday. Public health specialist of the Union Ministry of Family Welfare Dr Ruchi Jain, National Virology Institute (Pune) scientist Shailesh Pawar and Dr Anith Jindal of RML Hospital, Delhi, are in the team.
They interacted with Collector A Alexander and other department heads. Alexander submitted a report about the Covid and bird flu situation before the team. To assess the situation arising out of the outbreak of bird flu in two Kerala districts – Alappuzha and Kottayam, a three-member central team has been deployed.
According to the official sources, the team comprising Union Health Ministry s public health specialist Dr Ruchi Jain, Pune National Institute of Virology scientist Dr Shailesh Pawar and Delhi RML Hospital physician Dr Anith Jindal held discussions with district authorities at the collectorate, they said.

According to the state government, over 69,000 birds, including ducks and chicken, were culled in the districts of Alappuzha and Kottayam till Wednesday to contain the H5N8 strain of bird flu.
