The monarch butterfly fluttered a step closer to extinction Thursday, as international scientists put the iconic orange-and-black insect on the global endangered list because of its fast-dwindling numbers.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature estimates that monarch butterfly populations have declined between 22% and 72% over a decade.

The western population is estimated to have declined by 99.9% between the 1980s and 2021 – from 10 million to less than 2,000.

The Fish and Wildlife Service has said it will propose listing the monarch in 2024 under the Endangered Species Act if populations don't rebound.
