ORNL partners on science kits for kids in rural East Tennessee schools

KINGSTON, Tenn. Oak Ridge National Laboratory Director Thomas Zacharia and Associate Laboratory Director Stan Wullschleger visited classrooms at Midway Elementary School in Kingston, Tenn, recently as teachers led students through energy-themed science kits called Learning Lunchboxes.
“More than anything else what we want to do is try to open up the curiosity of kids and encourage them to learn,” Zacharia said in an interview. “You want to spark their curiosity as early as you can.”
Joining them were two employees from Center of Science and Industry (COSI) the Columbus, Ohio museum Frederic Bertley, president and CEO of COSI, and Stephen White, COSI vice president of external affairs, strategic initiatives and business development.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Center of Science and Industry and the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network have partnered to deliver hundreds of free science kits called Learning Lunchboxes to STEM-designated schools in East Tennessee. The program, named the Tennessee Distance Learning Initiative, provides engaging, hands-on activities aligned with Next Generation Science Standards.
