For too many elected officials, the term “public servant” doesn’t always ring true.
That was not the case with former Youngstown 1st Ward Councilman Artis Gillam Sr., who died Sunday at age 78.
Gillam’s sense of community spirit and volunteerism earned him respect and recognition.
One day after his death, Gillam’s pastor, the Rev. Dr. William C. King Jr. of Price Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, said Gillam’s service to community ran deep.
It was that drive that led him to want to make a difference as a member of city council but more so as a member of the community.
