Saturday saw a partial solar eclipse visible across the Americas, with an annular or "ring of fire" eclipse seen by those within a narrow path across nine U.S. states.

What is a ring of fire eclipse? In a total eclipse, the moon is close enough to Earth that it completely blocks the sun. “Ring of fire” is a nickname given to an annular solar eclipse, an eclipse in which the moon does not completely overlap the sun and therefore leaves a ring of visible sunlight around the moon’s shadow.

Slowly but surely, we'll lose most of the clouds tonight, and it will be a chilly start to the weekend Saturday morning. The annular solar eclipse will be visible, but you'll need eye protection!

Skygazers across the Americas are in for a celestial treat on Saturday: an annular solar eclipse. Next it will cross Mexico and Central America, then into South America through Colombia and northern Brazil before ending at sunset in the Atlantic Ocean.
