Bergen Republicans endorse suspended N.J. police chief accused of corruption
Updated Apr 03, 2021;
A Bergen County police chief currently suspended over corruption and misconduct charges has been endorsed by the county GOP as their nominee to vie for the County Sheriff’s race.
The Bergen County Republican Organization endorsed Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler as the Republican candidate for the Bergen County Sheriff’s Race, despite allegations that he ordered officers under his command to provide escorts while on-duty for the funeral home he owns.
At the organization’s convention Tuesday night, Kugler received nearly three times as many votes as challenger Harry Shortway, the Midland Park mayor, reported NorthJersey.com. The vote means Kugler will get the “party line,” the first position on the ballot as an endorsed candidate.

Good Wednesday morning!
The detention of undocumented immigrants at county jails has been a really uncomfortable controversy for New Jersey Democrats over the last couple years one that wasn’t heavily discussed until the Trump era.
All three county jails that house ICE inmates are in places entirely represented by Democrats. It’s a lot of revenue.

Good Friday morning!
It’s been a rough week for the Democratic establishment-backed ticket in District 37. First Palisades Park Mayor Christopher Chung dropped out of the Assembly after a scathing Comptroller’s Office report on his town’s governance. Then Assembly candidate Alexandra Soriano-Taveras dropped out over her comments about boycotting businesses on Teaneck’s Cedar Lane.
For the first time in a long time Thursday morning, the officers of the now-defunct Bergen County Police Department stood before the county sheriff with smiles on their faces.
The 37 men and women arranged themselves in neat rows near the steps of the Bergen County Courthouse in Hackensack and echoed back the oath of office to Sheriff Anthony Cureton as he read it aloud.
And just like that, they officially became sheriff s officers. And the years of administrative battles and legal broadsides between the county police and the Sheriff s Office were over. This is a moment of celebration, Cureton told the crowd of officers, county officials and family members. Let s move forward.
