When Anya Ayoung Chee attended the arts and music festival Burning Man in Nevada, about four years ago, she wore her old Monday wear costumes, designed by a variety of local designers. And she fit right in.
It was then the 39-year-old fashion designer and businesswoman had an epiphany.
“It was so ideal for that setting that I was like, why am I beating up with Carnival?” she told Business Day. “About 75,000 people go to this festival. And at maybe 50 per cent of them are women. Within that, a percentage of women who can purchase products at a high price point. This was an amazing market.”

Anya Ayoung Chee doesn’t take the opportunities she’s had in life for granted. She understands and appreciates the unique power and influence she has as one of the Caribbean’s brightest creative stars. And she wants to use that platform for good.
“My work has evolved beyond fashion in a sense where I’ve started up something that has to do with where entrepreneurship meets social impact and with an emphasis on small business – and I guess if you want to get more granular, creative industries,” the 39-year-old fashion designer, reality TV star and creative entrepreneur told WMN.

THE Massy Group on Monday said it is playing its part to help entrepreneurial growth throughout the Caribbean by providing a newly formed social enterprise, Nudge, with US$1 million in funding.
In a statement, Massy Group’s president and CEO Gervase Warner said, “The Massy board of directors has approved an initial expenditure of the equivalent of US$1 million to develop and deliver programs to entrepreneurs across the region, including pop-up points-of-sale in our Massy Stores, as well as for investment in worthy entrepreneurs.
