NASA is returning astronauts to the Moon and eventually Mars with its Artemis  Program. The inaugural mission of NASA’s Space Launch System with an un-crewed Orion spacecraft, Artemis 1, is scheduled for later this year. Artemis 1 will fly a 21-day mission 280,000 miles from Earth — designed to test all systems. If successful, Artemis 2 will fly a probable repeat mission with four astronauts. Artemis 3 is scheduled for a crewed Moon landing carrying the first woman and the next man to set...

Any minute now we should see spaceship 2 landing on this runway, and richard branson now officially an astronaut, according to the u.s. government, the faa and the u.s. military. i understand the carmen line. a lot of other countries say he did not quite make it, but hey, he was weightless and the u.s. government recognizes him as an astronaut and all the other members of his crew. theyre going to land, i would imagine, richard branson style. there will probably be a popping of champagne, a conc...

People working together to make it happen. so it is not a quick process. it takes a long time to make these things happen. but what is difference this time, with the commercial space industry, i believe that that will accelerate the innovation and maybe speed things back up not maybe as fast as it was during the apollo program, but it will speed things up and for me personally, i was a little jealous. it would have been nilaeen nice along with them. >> and that can still happen. >> absolutely. >...

Where the mother ship took off exactly an hour ago. so rachel, 60 minutes up to the edge of space and back. not too shabby. >> reporter: hey, brian, i got to tell you right here at spaceport america, i can confirm that the uss unity has safely landed on the runway here. were getting live images from richard branson. he is clapping. you can hear the crowd behind me cheering. vss unity, once again, brian, has safely landed here on that 12,000-foot runway at spaceport america. richard branson has f...

The work of my life. ali, good morning. good to see you. when apollo happened in the late 60s into the early 70s, its this expectation that, wow, we started, this is the beginning and were not turning back. that it was, you know, a few brave men that would be followed by a few brave women, and then the public would go next. but that wasnt what happened. the apollo program ended in december of 1972, and after a hiatus of a decade, the space shuttle program went and it as well was only a governmen...

Little more about what this means. kristin fisher, back over to you. this is the first moment that a guy who has bought his own spaceship has then flown his own spac spaceship, right? he wanted to do this, he had the funds, he raised money from others, now hes gone to space on his own spaceship. thats the mile marker today, right? >> reporter: correct. that is the historic first today. and making it even more historic is the fact that in just a few days from now, on july 20, the anniversary of t...

About hundreds of people being there, friends, family, students. there are scholarship recipients who are waiting to cheer branson on. so as much as this is a commercial, and virgin galactic is putting on an expensive commercial today, this is for people who didnt get to watch space launches. theyre instead watching virgin galactic launches. >> reporter: i grew up in a world where space launches were very commonplace in terms of nasas space shuttle. after the apollo program, a lot of folks lost ...

Richard branson after he got back. how is he feeling about the mission? can you describe what it was like in those five minutes they were on the edge of space and weightless, what its like to be there? >> i think its really important right now, yasmin to recognize richard was inspired by the apollo program. so was jeff bezos, so would you elon musk. that was their inspiration. talk to go richard before the flight and right after he got to the ground, that sense of dreams fulfilled. the fact he h...
