A year into lockdown, the powerful get away with violating protocols
BY REIN TARINAY
A year into the pandemic, double standards on how minimum health standards and quarantine protocols are observed remains evident, with government officials and personalities breaching protocols and getting away with it while nearly 600,000 Filipinos, mostly poor, have been warned, ticketed, fined, and charged over quarantine violations.
News reports revealed that the renewed stricter lockdown implementation has led to the arrests of almost 50,000 Filipinos in the first week of March 2021 alone. This amid another surge in the number of new daily COVID-19 cases, vaccination roll out for health workers and the poor still delayed, social protection for displaced workers wanting, and the country’s testing capacity and contact tracing remaining weak.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque confirmed Cascolan’s new post after the retired police general confirmed it in a text message on Wednesday morning.
“Kinukumpirma po natin na napirmahan na noong Lunes, February 22, ang appointment paper ni dating PNP chief Camilo Cascolan bilang undersecretary sa Office of the President (We confirm that the appointment paper of former PNP chief Camilo Cascolan as underscretary of the OP was signed on Monday, February 22),” he said in his Wednesday presser.
“Welcome aboard, Usec. Cascolan,” he added.
President Duterte named Cascolan as the 24th chief of the PNP on September 2, 2020. He held the position for two months until he retired and was replaced by controversial cop Debold Sinas on November 10 last year.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is requesting President Duterte to buy attack helicopters for its anti-criminality campaign and internal security operations that include the aggressive campaign against communist rebels.
PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas said the procurement of additional helicopters will be part of the 20 air assets that they plan to procure as part of the modernization program of the police force.

The supposed 11th air asset of the PNP is no longer usable as it crashed in Laguna last year. The crash resulted in the death of a police general who battled the serious injuries he incurred for seven months. At least six others were injured, including then PNP chief Archie Gamboa.
