FPGA-Based Arduino Clones on Steroids

by Max Maxfield Every now and then, someone comes up with an idea that makes me think, “Wow, that’s a great concept, why didn’t I think of that?” This was the case a couple of years ago when I was introduced to Jason Pecor from Alorium Technology. In turn, Jason introduced me to their XLR8 (“Accelerate”), which is a drop-in replacement for an Arduino with an interesting twist. As we see below, the XLR8 has the same physical footprint as a regular Arduino Uno. The difference is that, as opposed to using a regular 8-bit ATmega328P microcontroller from Microchip Technology, the XLR8 features a MAX 10 FPGA from Altera (now Intel). This FPGA has been configured to behave exactly like the Uno’s processor, which is implemented as a soft core, right down to the 32 KB Flash memory and the 2 KB RAM, all running at 16 MHz.

Agent-Based Modeling Helps in Studying Emergent Phenomena

An Agent-Based Model (ABM) is a category of a computational model for investigating actions and interactions of autonomous agents. The concept behind an ABM is the observation of simultaneous and multiple interactions of agents or programmed instructed entities through simulated environments. In developing these simulated environments, predictions of emergent phenomena can be evaluated. With an ABM, macro or high-level system properties can emerge from lower-level system interactions. Moreover, large scale state changes will emerge from micro-scale agent behaviors generated from system-level interactions.  Such modeling techniques can be used to observe and evaluate new plant floor Machine-to-Machine (M2M) networked systems using Profibus or Modbus communication protocols. Unfortunately, these days unexpected and excessive rainfalls occur more frequently and became relatively common due to climate change in some areas. Meanwhile, other regions suffer from drought. As 2020 passes, more than thirty-five incidents that caused the loss of crops and livestock due to heavy and violent rainfalls are recorded in my region. To contribute to the solution to forfend and avert excessive rainfall instigated problems like agricultural productivity loss, I contemplated this project as a starting point.
