Omicron seems to produce milder symptoms and fewer hospitalizations than Delta, likely because vaccines still ward off severe disease.

In previous surges in South Africa, deaths were closely tied to case numbers. But this time, deaths are staying low, despite a large uptick in cases.

Omicron could represent the swiftest outbreak in the US to date, lasting no more than three months, new models predict.
