A FORMER soldier, fireman and lifelong British Legion stalwart has died aged 94. Born in Catterick, during his formative years Ernie Tull’s family were travelling show people who settled in the newly-formed Garrison. Unusually his aunt was a female boxer who was undefeated against all-comers. The show also featured a bear wrestling with her, which once escaped. It took the family and the Military Police three days to successfully recapture the unfortunate creature. The threat of Zeppelin raids brought a halt to the highly-illuminated shows but the gift of a horse and cart gave the family a chance to earn a living, however times were hard. His father had been a soldier and it was the British Legion that helped the family through this difficult period, something Ernie never forgot.
