Poets and songwriters are being urged to get creative as entries are now open for the 2021 Rathdowney Song & Poem Contest.
The contest, which is now in its second year, is dedicated to bringing the stories and tales of this parish to life. It’s a platform to celebrate the art of writing and music and all levels of skill are welcome.
The organisers say it supports creative minds through the arts of songwriting and poetry whilst competing for over €600 in cash prizes.
In its first year in 2020, those behind the project said it saw an amazing amount of songs and poems entered.
Laois poet, Arthur Broomfield launches new book
Reporter:
What do poets do in the lockdown?
Write poetry of course, or that’s what renowned Ballyfin poet, Dr Arthur Broomfield has been doing.
His latest work, Ireland Calling [Revival Press, Limerick] is a new departure for the best-selling author.
It digs deep into the Irish ballad tradition of telling yarns and bringing characters to life through language that sparkles with vitality.
“This book truly is poetry for the people,” says Dr Clare Bolger.
Maureen Culleton, world renowned leader in the promotion of Irish culture, has given the book her imprimatur, praise indeed from the founder of Sean Chistin.
