Pioneering Melbourne restaurateur Hermann Schneider dies, aged 86

Hermann Schneider, probably the single most influential figure in Melbourne s restaurant history, died last Thursday night in hospital, of lymphoma. He was 86.
An owner-chef who was part of the dining scene for more than 40 years, Schneider was a trendsetter and an inspiration to the talented. Guy Grossi apprenticed under him, so did Luke Mangan and Teage Ezard, who paid tribute to his mentor on Instagram, saying, He created our standards and our benchmarks. He transmitted his knowledge and values to all those who worked with him, and was uncompromising in his demands for the first rate.
