GUWAHATI: Assam Congress on Tuesday announced that it will build a grand memorial here to commemorate the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) protestors who sacrificed their lives if the party comes to power, its campaign committee chairman Pradyut Bordoloi said on Tuesday.
Bordoloi said the memorial will be built for the anti-CAA peoples movement that has been going on in Assam over the last few years to save Assamese pride .
The Congress announcement came two days after former Congress president Rahul Gandhi promised that the party will respect the Assam Accord and will not implement the botched-up CAA if it wins the election due in March-April. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Ripun Bora said that the grand memorial will be the state s message to BJP, which is No CAA in Assam .
The Assam Congress on Monday said the chief of its ally AIUDF, Badruddin Ajmal, is not anti-Hindu and the BJP, which accuses him of being communal, had in fact joined hands with his party to run three district councils in the state.
The Congress has formed an alliance with the All India United Democratic Front, the Left and a regional party to fight the Assam Assembly polls that are likely to be held in April.
alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed the people of the state by enacting the Citizenship Amendment Act. BJP s Vision Document 2016-2025 had promised to follow in letter and spirit the Assam Accord with March 25, 1971 as the cut off date to distinguish between illegal migrants and citizens of the state, Assam Congress President Ripun Bora said at a press conference here. The Accord made it clear that those who came to the state after 1971 will be considered illegal migrants but by enacting the CAA, BJP has allowed Bangladeshis to come to India till December 31, 2014 (the cut off date). It has given the Bangladehis a red carpet welcome, he said.
