There was anguish and anger as hundreds of people grilled officials at a public meeting in Waikouaiti about lead detected in the town’s water supply.
The release of information regarding potential lead contamination in the water supply of three Otago towns has slowed to a trickle. Requests for updates about the contamination crisis have been stonewalled by the Dunedin City Council. Meanwhile, residents in Waikouaiti, Karitane and Hawksbury Village in east Otago are still unable to use tap water for drinking, cooking or preparing food after they were told in early February that lead was discovered in the water supply at 40 times the safe level for drinking.
