National protest against ‘inhumane’ maternity restrictions launched Public urged to show support on social media and outside hospitals Depriving birthing mothers the support of partners during labour was a return to the Dark Ages, Krysia Lynch from the Association for Improvements in Maternity Services (AIMS) has said. Lynch was speaking as AIMS launched national campaign against maternity care restrictions imposed during the pandemic. Birthing partners have not been allowed to attend ante-natal appointments or be present during the early stages of labour since the Covid-19 outbreak began last March. The controversial bans have remained for almost 14 months despite repeated calls from opposition TDs and advocacy groups to ease the restrictions.

Rotunda Hospital extends visiting hours for maternity partners

The Rotunda Hospital in Dublin has opted to extend visiting hours for maternity partners. The restrictions will ease to allow twice as much access for nominated companions on weekdays and weekends. Master of the Rotunda, Professor Fergal Malone, We ve been monitoring the incidence of COVID infection amongst our patients for some time now - and we ve noted that thankfully the incidence seems to be falling significantly. This is mirroring what we re seeing in the general community. So based on that, we re gradually easing the restrictions on partner visiting. We re doubling the visiting in the evenings, from 4pm till 8pm in the evening, and longer on the weekends from 1pm till 8pm.

Patients group joins calls to vaccinate pregnant women

A leading maternity expert has said an association of Covid-19 infection with still birth remained an unproven observation in a move aimed at reassuring pregnant women. A potential link between Covid-19 and stillbirth was disclosed at a National Public Health Emergency meeting on Thursday, after coroners found Covid-19 infection of the placenta as a factor in four stillbirths in January and February. Dr Krysia Lynch, a maternity expert who chairs the Association for Improvements in Maternity Services (AIMS), said the news of the potential association has understandably caused increased anxiety in pregnant women. However she said while grateful the data has been released, it is as yet incomplete and provisional .
