Mr. Chair, fellow commissioners, ladies and gentlemen, good morning, my name is nelson lum, and im the newly appointed member of this commission. Ive been a resident since 1961, and i went to school here. Upon graduation from George Washington high school, in 1966, i was soon notified by uncle sam that he had a special interest in me. I was inducted in the army where i volunteers to be a member of the paratrooper unit, and after training, i was assigned to kentucky with 101st airborne division. In 1967, my division was deployed to vietnam. Luckily, i returned in november 1968, with all my fingers and my toes. I took advantage of the gi bill and completed a degree in criminology. The spread of coronavirus is now affecting everything from travel and major events to the stock market, in addition to the human toll. Government, community, faithbased and corporate organizations across the country and around the world are meeting, monitoring and urging people to take precautionary measures, including washing your hands frequently, using hand sanitizer, social distancing on site and staying home if you are not feeling well. We are here this morning to learn more about how our local cities and counties are preparing for possible outbreaks. Do local Health Officials have enough protective equipment, including masks and gloves on hand . Are Hospital Personnel and First Responders trained up to deal with coronavirus patients . There will be so little to talk about when we talk about donald trump. With the clinton and george w on the docket today, there are a few things that warrants just some quick musing at the start. The first of which, which always older folksind of like us have to acclimate our psyches to realize that, to you all, bill clinton jen genuinely is a figure of history. None of you have an active recollection, or even a childhood recollection of bill clinton in office. Which actually is kind of amazing. Kind of a hazy figure to you. I started the project asking, is there a long history of black women in sports . I found more than i expected to find quite frankly. There wasnt any archive labeled , this is the history of black sports. So i had to piece it together. I got started by finding three women who actually played baseball in the negro leagues in the 1950s. It was a remarkable story. They played with the men. One of the things that stuck out to me about that story was that the owner who had brought in these black women to play with the man said he had a file where women across the country were writing in to request tryouts. That stuck in my head as a young graduate student and i thought, is there a lot of black girls history trying to play baseball, maybe theres is a Hidden History here. So that made me go out to find other stories in the book, from track, to tennis, from baltimore to rome, really looking at black women in sporting history in the 20th century.
